The 6th Massachusetts Life Sciences Innovation (MALSI) Day is the biggest day for life sciences startups and innovation in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This is a high-energy, hands-on event which brings together scientific leaders and business experts to mingle with scientists, post-docs, professors, entrepreneurs, innovators, and venture capitalists.

Business as Usual or Brave New World? Can we learn valuable lessons from life sciences start-up companies that have already been formed and funded? Or are life sciences entrepreneurs entering a “Brave New World” where their path to success is going to be completely different? Cellanyx Diagnostics was recognized by the Boston Business Journal for winning the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) New Venture Competition, receiving $5,o00 worth of credit. The business plans to use these funds for engineering, facilities services and product development

According to Ashok Chander the CEO of Cellanyx, the company was also honored by Boston University and received $20,000 from Cummings and $50,000 dollars from Wilmer Hale.

“In the coming years we will continue to accrue clinical data for prostate cancer diagnostics as well as work on product development,” said Chander.

Atentiv Inc. Secures $8M Financing to Advance Product Applications to Commercialization and Appoints New Members to Board of Directors

Cambridge, Mass. [April 4, 2013] – Atentiv Inc., a company providing consumers, educators, payers and clinicians with digital learning applications for children and adults, today announced it has closed an additional $8 million round of financing. The funds will be used to advance its proprietary technology platform™ the Atentiv™ System— to market.

Unlike any other learning system, the Atentiv™ System utilizes noninvasive direct brain-to-computer wireless connection that enables simple and practical training of new attention skills, personalized to the user. Initial product applications are designed to optimize attention skills in elementary and high school children, and early research suggests the technology is a novel potential treatment option for children suffering from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

With these additions, the Board of Directors now consists of five members, including Robert Taber, Ph.D., Senior Advisor to the Chancellor for Global Strategies, Duke University Medical Center and Eric Gordon, Founder, Chairman and CEO, Atentiv, Inc.

Wednesday, the buses rolled up to the Cummings Center with 85 incubator leaders from around the world. Mentors helped usher the crowd to the conference center. Cumming’s GM Stephen J. Drohosky set the stage, highlighting the innovation that started here in 1903 under the United Shoe Manufacturing company.  He contrasted that to the site’s rebirth as one of the world’s largest industrial plant recycling projects.

Marty and Tom highlighted NSIV’s principles and accomplishments.  There were lots of good questions asked by the visitors. Running on a disciplined schedule, our team then led six separate groups through our equipped laboratories and offices. Many of our clean and biotech members were on-hand to share insights and shake hands.

NBIA serves 2,000 members in over 60 nations. We thought you’d appreciate the fact that NSIV was selected as a good example for other incubators from North Dakota to Nigeria.

Onward and upward.

The participants also had the opportunity to see meet some of our supporters, volunteers and – of course – our member companies.  All in all, we were quite proud to have the opportunity to show off a little of what we have been able to do with the help of all of these stakeholders in our effort to make the North Shore a destination for innovation and economic development.
